HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2019:

Rudy Ybarra

Before becoming one of the most successful youth coaches out of Southern California, Rudy Ybarra was a professional player out of Santa Barbara. He played with the Los Angeles Aztecs and Memphis Rogues of the North American Soccer League. Ybarra later traded field soccer for indoor soccer before retiring with Real Santa Barbara. Since then, he turned his focus to coaching, starting off as a player/coach of semi-pro Santa Barbara Soccer Club of the Central Coast Soccer League.

In youth soccer, Ybarra led the Boys 1996 and Boys 1998 teams to numerous Cal South State Championships, US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships and US Youth Soccer National League Championships. The Boys 1996 group won the state, regional and national championship in 2014. The Boys 1998 group won the Cal South State Championship on six different occasions (2010 and 2012-2016), six US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships (2010-2016) and three US Youth Soccer National League Championships (2012, 2013 and 2016).

Gary Thompson

Gary Thompson has been involved with Cal South and US Youth Soccer since 1980.  Thompson stepped up and ran the Cal South ODP Program as a volunteer form 1983-1986, has also served as an ODP manager/administrator for over 38 years, and has served on numerous Cal South Committees, including State Cup.

Additionally, Thompson has been a referee and an assignor in the Long Beach area and is well-known as an ambassador for Cal South. Gary has also volunteered with the USYS Region IV Boys ODP program for over 25 years as ODP Team Manager and travel chaperone.

Gary also volunteered for both the US Men’s and Women’s World Cup on their transportation teams.

Shannon Boxx

Before winning three Olympic Gold medals and one FIFA Women’s World Cup, Shannon Boxx was playing for the Torrance United Waves Soccer Club and winning four Cal South State Cups and leading her team to the US Youth Soccer National Championships Final Four. Boxx went on to play for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish where she helped the team win the school’s first NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship, being named to the All-Big East team three years in a row.

Professionally, Boxx played for the Boston Renegades of the W-League, and then went on to play for 1. FC Saarbrücken of the German Bundesliga. Returning to America, Boxx played for the San Diego Spirit of the Women’s United Soccer Association, before being traded to the New York Power. In 2009, Boxx returned to play for her home team, the Los Angeles Sol of the Women’s Professional Soccer but ended up at FC Gold Pride after Sol ceased operations. She continued her successful career when she signed with magicJack and finally the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women’s Soccer League, where she retired in 2015.
