Cal South Announces Next Youth Module Instructor Training Day
for Sunday, August 5th In Fullerton

"Teach the teacher" approach boosts recreational coach training

Thursday, July 19, 2012 (Fullerton, CA) - Cal South announced today the second ever Cal South Youth Module Instructor Training Day. The first training day, held in June, included representatives from over 30 recreational leagues. The instruction, coupled with the newly created US Youth Soccer Youth Module 1 online training course, is a significant step forward in how Cal South educates its recreational coaches. The new event will be held at Cal South Corporate Office in Fullerton on Sunday, August 5.

Steve Hoffman, Cal South's Director of Coaching Education, says the training is a "teach the teacher" approach that will give much greater access to training for beginning recreational coaches. "The coaches that take this course and qualify as an instructor can then turn around and teach the YM1 practical field sessions to their own club or league's recreational coaches. And they can do it free of charge. They will have much greater flexibility in scheduling both in terms of location and dates."

Hoffman recommends that the attendees for the training be a league's Recreational Director of Coaching or a similarly experienced and qualified coach. The preference is for a coach with experience teaching the U6-U8 age groups and possessing either a USSF "D" or "E" license, or higher. Coaches who hold a US Youth National Youth License would be very welcome to attend also.

Candidates who take the training course and the online US Youth Soccer online course will go through an evaluation in which they conduct their own practical training session. Those who qualify will be certified to teach the practical field sessions for the YM1 course. The first certified group of teachers would be eligible to teach the YM1 practical part of the courses starting in the summer 2012 season. To stay current, candidates will be required to be re-certified annually.

Each Cal South recreational league will be allowed to have one candidate participate. Leagues with over 1,000 registered recreational players will be allowed to send two candidates. There is no cost per candidate.
