7 CAL SOUTH TEAMS COMPETING IN SWEDEN AT THE GOTHIA CUP THIS WEEK
julio 18, 2011
July 17, 2011 (GOTHENBURG, Sweden) - Seven Cal South teams will begin play this week at the 2011 edition of the Gothia Cup, one of the largest soccer tournaments in the world, on over 90 fields in Gothenburg, Sweden, taking place from July 18-23. This year, Gothia Cup, also known as the World Youth Cup, will feature 1570 teams (U11 to U19) made up of around 35,000 players from 73 different nations. Scoring updates can be followed at the tournament website at www.gothiacup.se/eng/index.php/match-schedule.
Seven of the participating teams hail from Cal South:
One Cal South team, the Girls Under-14 Carmel Valley Manchester Academy, earned their spot at the Gothia Cup by winning at the Manchester United Premier Cup 2011 U.S. Finals in Oregon last month. We talked to GU14 CV Manchester head coach Felicia Kappes about her team's success thus far:
Cal South: What did it take for your team to make it to the Gothia Cup?
Felicia Kappes: To win the prestigious Manchester United Premier Cup was incredible given the talent and extremely high level of competition. It was a grueling format with two twenty-minute high-pressure halves, with no time for build up or ability to break down your opponent. It was end-to-end soccer, very exciting and stressful at the same time.
Physically you had to be extremely fit given the size of the fields and the pace of the games. Mentally, you had to be very strong and determined to fight until the very end, given many games were determined late in the half or often in penalty kicks. The substitution patterns were also difficult given there was no re-entry for players, so tactically the coaches had to really think about how they wanted to match up against teams.
I was very proud my team met every challenge thrown at them head on and ultimately found a way to win. They have waited for a long time to be rewarded and all their hard work finally paid off.
CS: Tell us about the strengths of your team's game on the pitch.
FK: We play a nice style of soccer with incredible team speed as we go forward. We are committed to playing solid team defense. This high-pressure defense often allows us to possess the ball often and attack our opponents quickly and dynamically. I think one of the most important components of this team is that they believe in the system we play, they believe in each other and the close bond they have established on and off the field, and they now believe they can win big games. That passion and desire to never give up will always have them competing at a high level and often in playoffs situations.
CS: What are you looking forward to most in reaching the Gothia Cup?
FK: Just enjoying this very special moment and opportunity, soaking in a different culture and having fun while we once again go for a big championship. I keep telling these girls they will remember this tournament for the rest of their lives. My players feel very proud to represent the US and girls soccer in the Gothia Cup!
Cal South wishes all of its teams the greatest success at the 2011 Gothia Cup!
