2011 USASA NATIONAL CUPS FINALS TEAM PREVIEW: Men's Over 30 SAN DIEGO SURF
julio 14, 2011
July 13, 2011 (Bowling Green, KY) - They have won a half dozen league titles over the past thirteen years, as well as a pair of Coast Soccer League championships over the last five years . But there comes a time when even a team with such long-standing local success as the Men's Over 30 San Diego Surf wishes to test that success on a national level.
The Surf will get that chance on Friday when they step onto the pitch in Bowling Green, Kentucky to begin a full weekend of play in the 2011 United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) National Cups Finals, being held from July 15-17.
The men of the San Diego Surf earned their spot in the Finals via their success last month in the 2011 USASA Region IV National Cups in Sacramento from June 3-5. The Surf decisively shut out the Capital Hill Rowdies of Washington, 3-0 in the championship final.
"Our trip to Sacramento definitely gave us a nice sense of accomplishment as we were able to overcome some very good teams," said Surf coach Lucas Curtolo. "Leading up to the Regionals, we were training together as a team once a week, and then working out twice a week individually as we knew playing four games in 36 hours was going to be a challenge. While there were times in a couple of games that we had to sit in and defend, we felt that the majority of the time we were able to play the most attractive and most effective soccer of the weekend. By capitalizing on our opportunities in our first few games, we were able to manage our players accordingly throughout the tournament, which allowed us to play a great game in the final."
While the original members of the team began playing together over 20 years ago, the core of the current Surf men's team is made up of friends who grew up playing together and against each other since they were kids. The majority of our team lives in North San Diego County and trains together once a week. Since 1998, the Surf men have won six San Diego County Soccer League (SDCSL) league titles in the Men's Premier and Masters (Over 30) divisions since 1998.
On the field, the Surf are led at the back by Cameron Adams and Paul Currie, in the midfield by Jose Ocampo, Chiky Luna, and Toby Taitano, and up front by Brian Woods and Shane Walton. All of them will get their biggest test yet when they face the other three Regional champions at the National Cups Finals: United SC (Region I - D.C./Virginia), Corona FC (Region II - Kansas), and Royal Eagles Kickers (Region III - Florida).
"Our primary goal heading into this weekend's National Championships," said Curtolo "is to represent Surf Cup, the Surf Soccer Club, Cal South, and Region IV in the best way possible. Winning it all would not only be a great feat for us as team, but also for all of the guys we play with on a year-round basis in the San Diego soccer community."
