VENTURA, CA (May 17, 2011) - Cal South recently announced it will be hosting the Pacific Coast Invitational, an Olympic Development Program (ODP) showcase for the 1998 age group, which will also serve as an official national identification event for U.S. Soccer. The Pacific Coast Invitational will be held over Memorial Day weekend, May 27-30, 2011 at the Ventura College Sportsplex, one of the top community college facilities in the country. The event is a first of its kind for Cal
South.
In addition to Cal South, three other US Youth Soccer state associations - Cal North, North Texas and Washington - will each bring two Boys '98 and two Girls '98 teams to the Invitational, for a total of 16 ODP teams taking part. The Pacific Coast Invitational is expected to not only display some incredible competition on the pitch by many of the best, elite U13 players in the game, but will also feature special guest appearances and lectures on sports science issues off the field. Two
other girls' teams, the '97 North Texas White and the Camarillo Eagles of Cal South, will be competing at the Invitational as well.
"This is the first time that we've hosted an event of this type and we want to be sure it is very worthwhile and special for the players taking part," said Cal South Director of Coaching and Player Development Steve Hoffman. "We've been working closely with U.S. Soccer, who will have full-time scouts on hand, to ensure the Invitational became a solid I.D. event. The Invitational will give these scouts a closer look at a smaller group of players than at the regional camp
level, and our goal is for U.S. Soccer to truly identify the best kids in these state association programs."
In addition to the slate of regular games each team will play at the Invitational, two all-star games will be held, one for boys and one for girls. Each all-star game will feature 44 players -- 11 chosen from each state association per game -- and each half will feature full 11v11 sides which will then switch to the other 22 players following halftime, so that all 44 players will get a chance to be evaluated equally in the all-star matches. "It's an extra level at which kids at the
Invitational will be tested and identified," said Hoffman. "The strength of ODP is it asks players to always strive to be their best, all while undergoing constant evaluation."
A special presentation dinner banquet will also be held for all of the players and coaches involved in the event. The new Developmental Director for the U.S. Soccer Women's National Teams, Jillian Ellis, has also been announced as a guest speaker at the banquet. Other guests at the event will be former Manchester United player Billy Garton, University of Santa Barbara head coach Tim Vom Steeg, and professional midfielder Christian Jimenez.
Following the event, Cal South staff will choose the 18 boys and 18 girls who will represent the state association in the 1998 age bracket at the US Youth Soccer Region IV ODP Camps in late June and July. The remainder of the players will be invited to attend the Cal South ODP State Development Camp being held in June.
