CAL SOUTH'S JONATHAN HUGHES NAMED U.S. SOCCER DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY REFEREE OF THE WEEK FOR THE WEEK OF FEB. 22

febrero 26, 2010

Referee of the Week: Jonathan Hughes
Hometown: Costa Mesa, Calif.
Grade: 6

Cal South referee Jonathan Hughes has been selected as the Development Academy Referee of the Week for his performance in a match on Feb. 13 between So Cal division opponents, Pateadores and LA Galaxy.

Jonathan has been a referee since 2002. In addition to his assignments in the Development Academy, he has also worked USL and WPS games. He has been a collegiate referee for the past three years, culminating in an appearance at the NAIA Women's National Championships in 2009.

When it comes to his own development as a referee, Jonathan recognizes the people around him in the Southern California region.

"I have been very fortunate through my referee career to have mentors," says Jonathan. "I am having the opportunity to officiate higher level games, like those in the Development Academy, and receive the mentoring and feedback from referees that are currently at the levels I am aspiring to reach."

Jonathan's goal is to become a FIFA referee and represent the U.S. in the World Cup. He plans to use his abilities and the local education opportunities to achieve that goal.
