PHOENIX, AZ (January 20, 2010) - Cal South Olympic Development Program (ODP) teams captured five out of eight regional championships yesterday at the US Youth Soccer ODP Region IV Championships in Phoenix, AZ, held from January 16-19, 2010. Cal South sent teams in each of the age and gender brackets at the ODP Regionals, and all eight teams fought their way through the preliminary matches to end up in each of the finals.

The Cal South 1993 Boys made it a clean sweep of all their appearances in the ODP Regionals as they won their fourth consecutive regional title. Juan "Crabby" Gutierrez of West Coast FC slammed home the game-winning goal in the 67th minute against Arizona, securing the 1-0 victory and sending the Cal South '93s back to the same fields in March as they try to defend the ODP National Championship they won last year. The US Youth Soccer ODP National Championships will be held in Phoenix from March 11 -14.

"Crabby is one of the best kept secrets in the country," said Cal South ODP coach Steve Hoffman. "He is making a very good habit of scoring big time goals for us, including the winning goal in last year's National Championship game. We really hope he keeps this habit up." The '93 side featured eight players who were making their first appearances with Cal South ODP. "This just confirms what we all know: that Southern California has such a deep pool of talent that we are able to pull off this sort of feat, entering such a tough tournament with new players."

The Cal South 1994 Boys will now be taking their first trip to the ODP National Championships thanks to a game-winning goal scored in the 40th minute by Emilio Casas of West Coast FC, giving Cal South a 1-0 triumph over Washington. Cal South's 1994 Girls also secured their ticket to the ODP Nationals when Sydney Zuccolotto scored to put Cal South on top over Utah, 1-0.

In the '95 Girls bracket, Cal South ended their last two games defeating their opponents 4-3 on penalty kicks, first in the semis versus Washington after a 1-1 regulation, and then while securing the championship in the finals against Oregon after a scoreless match. The '96 Cal South Girls racked up an astounding goal differential of 27-0 in their five matches leading into the final against Nevada, whom they played to a scoreless draw before prevailing on penalty kicks, 4-3.
