JOHNNIE GARZA TAKES OVER AS CAL SOUTH PRESIDENT

LOS ANGELES, CA (February 17, 2010) - Cal South's Annual General Meeting was held Sunday, February 14 with elections held for multiple positions on the Board of Directors. Johnnie Garza is the newly elected Cal South President after winning a three-person contest. Lila Smith returns as Secretary after running unopposed. Three District Commissioners also return to the board: District 2 Commissioner John Mullen, District 4 Commissioner Derek Barraza and District 6 Commissioner Ann Shoemake. Mullen and Shoemake ran unopposed. Brett Wood was also named to the board as Vice President of Adults. All elected and appointed positions are for a two-year term.

President Johnnie Garza is looking forward to serving the membership of Cal South. "It's very exciting," said Garza, who prior to the election was serving as Cal South's Assistant Vice President. "I am humbled by the confidence entrusted in me by our members. Their enthusiasm and passion for our great association is evident, and I look forward to working with our Board of Directors and staff in serving their needs."

The AGM was held as part of the Soccer Nation Expo weekend at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Around 16,000 soccer fans visited the Expo and enjoyed more than one hundred exhibits on the show floor. Attendees enjoyed human foosball, new product demonstrations, Nike shoe trials, beach soccer and food sampling. The expo also hosted the US Futsal Southwest Regional Championships. And the "Center Pitch" area was active from open to close each day with clinics given by top level coaches from around the world.

Nearly 500 guests attended the Cal South Awards Banquet on Saturday, February 13 at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. The banquet honored the achievements of Cal South players, referees, coaches, volunteers, parents and administrators. And two Cal South alumni, Julie Foudy and Eric Wynalda, were inducted into the Cal South Hall of Fame.

The 2011 Cal South Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday, February 13 at the Long Beach Convention Center, where Soccer Nation Expo 2011 will also be held on Saturday and Sunday, February 12 and 13.
