November 6, 2009 (Fullerton, CA) - Cal South and the LA84 Foundation recently announced open registration for "Finishing and Goalkeeping," the next entry in their annual series of specialty coaching clinics. This year's clinic will be held on Saturday, December 12 at the recently dedicated Soboroff Sports Field at the Expo Center in Los Angeles. A non-refundable $25 deposit will secure a spot in the clinic, which is limited to the first 75 registered applicants.

Cal South and the LA84 Foundation arrived at the decision to present this clinic based on feedback given to them at previous coaching clinics, at which the most popular request was for more details regarding "finishing and goalkeeping." The resulting 4½-hour clinic will be broken into three courses, each one taught by a top clinician in their field. (The full day's schedule and details appear below.)

Ian Feuer, the Head Goalkeeping Coach for both the Los Angeles Galaxy and Pepperdine University's Women's Soccer program; Trevor James, Assistant Coach and Director of Player Development with the Los Angeles Galaxy; and Lee Hancock, PhD, a prominent sports psychologist, have been confirmed as the clinicians for the event. (There will possibly be some Spanish-speaking clinicians announced for this course in the near future.)

'How to Integrate the Goalkeeper into Your Sessions and Get Maximum Results" will be taught by Ian Feuer, whose professional playing career saw him keep goal with West Ham United and Luton Town in the English Premier League, where he played alongside such luminaries as Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and Paulo di Canio. Further playing stints saw him with Club Brugge in Belgium and the New England Revolution in the MLS, as well as playing on the U.S. National Team and for the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team. Feuer is also the owner and director of the Premier Goalkeeping Academy (P.GK.A.).

With a focus on the big difference between merely shooting the ball reflexively at the goal and actually creating a true "finishing" opportunity, a field session titled "Functional Training for Twin (Two) Forwards" will be run by Trevor James. In his role as the Galaxy's Director of Player Development, James oversees the Galaxy Youth Academy and all aspects of the creation and growth of the Galaxy's youth development teams. James' playing career saw him play in England with Ipswich Town and Colchester United, in the Norwegian First Division with Viking FK in Stavanger, and with the Los Angeles Lazers of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL).

The day will close out with a lecture session titled "Develop a Better Understanding on the Use of Sports Psychology with Youth Players," taught by Lee Hancock, PhD, founder and president of Develop Mental Solutions, an organization dedicated to developing mental skills and abilities in athletes, students and parents. Hancock consults with professional, college and youth athletes in order to help master the mental side of their sport and eventually perform to their potential in pressure situations. Hancock is a sought-after clinician, writer and lecturer, and is chair of the Kinesiology Masters program at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
