CHICAGO (May 15, 2012) - The 99th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup had its share of first-round surprises and tightly contested matches as the 2012 tournament kicked off Tuesday with 16 games across the country. The U.S. Adult Soccer Association regional qualifying teams made their voice heard with four winning squads out of nine entries.

The USASA's Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks FC garnered its first-ever U.S. Open Cup victory with a 3-1 win against the Carolina Dynamo of the Premier Development League at the Maryland SoccerPlex Stadium in Boyds, Md. The Aegean Hawks advance to the second round on Tuesday, May 22, to face the USL PRO's Richmond Kickers - an organization well known for its 1995 U.S. Open Cup Final victory against the El Paso Patriots.

Also on Tuesday, the Kansas City Athletics of the USASA overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit and scored three second-half goalson the road to defeat the PDL's Real Colorado Foxes. K.C. will have a difficult second round assignment next week when it takes on the Orlando City Soccer Club - last year's USL PRO champion - in Sanford, Fla.

On the west coast, PSA Elite's USASA (and Cal South) team maintained a lead through the bulk of its match as Davis Paul's two goals paced the team against the PDL's Portland Timbers U-23s for a 3-1 victory. And USASA (and Cal South) side Cal FC, led by Danny Barrera's two goals, defeated the PDL's Kitsap Pumas 3-1. (CalSouth.com editor's note: Davis Paul and Danny Barrera are both former players in Cal South's ODP program.)

May 8, 2012 (Fullerton, CA) - Cal South today announced the dates for the Pro+ Identification and Development Camps for elite players in the boys and girls '96, '97 and '98 age groups. The local camp will eliminate travel costs for the 18-20 players in each age group. U.S. Soccer staff will attend the camp, contributing to the high level of technical development and providing expanded opportunities under Pro+ for identification and advancement. Players in the same age
groups from Washington Youth Soccer Elite Player Development (EPD) program also attend.

Cal South's Director of Player Development and the head of the Pro+ program Steve Hoffman says the camp is a perfect example of what Pro+ is all about. "We will be significantly reducing costs for players and their families. Holding a local camp means no travel. It also means that camp participants are not away from their club training. Instead of leaving Southern California to be seen and train, we bring U.S. Soccer to us."

Hoffman is also looking forward to working with Washington Youth Soccer. "They are a forwarding thinking state association. EPD is a great player growth and development program. Incorporating their players brings more competition to the camp. And it gives their kids another opportunity to be identified by U.S. Soccer."

"Working with our fellow State Association Cal South to enhance the training, competition and exposure opportunities for our elite players will bring great benefit to all," said Doug Andreassen, Washington Youth Soccer President. "It is a great honor to partner with such a prestigious organization as Cal South and I know the collaboration between our Technical Departments will lead to great things for our youth and the sport of soccer"

The camp will follow U.S. Soccer's recommended curriculum with a minimum of three training sessions to one game. On the field, training will be based on position specific concepts such as defending the central channel and attacking the flanks. Off field lectures will cover match analysis, sports nutrition, injury prevention and regeneration. The training will be conducted by staff from Cal South Pro+, Washington Youth Soccer and U.S. Soccer, as well as selected Division 1 college coaches.

The girls' age groups will be in camp from June 30 to July 3. The boys follow with their training from July 4-7. Pro+ combines all of Cal South's current and future elite player development initiatives and places them under one integrated structure. With the support of Nike, the areas of emphasis for Pro+ are the identification, development, inclusion and advancement of the top male and female soccer players in Southern California.

On February 3, 2012, University of Texas midfielder and Cal South ODP alumnus Kylie Doniak was struck by a drunk driver in downtown Austin as she was walking through a crosswalk. The accident left Kylie with a massive head injury, a broken neck, a broken collarbone, a punctured lung, two broken bones in her leg, several broken ribs, facial lacerations and severe road rash. She was taken to intensive care, where the swelling of her brain caused doctors to place her in a medically induced coma.
After several operations and a move to a hospital in California, Kylie began to slowly recover and undergo rehab for her brain injury. In mid-April, she finally returned home after over two months in medical care. She is now walking and talking up a storm once more, but still has a long way to go to full recovery.

Players will be run through 11v11 scrimmages, technical and tactical training sessions, and participate in seminars on sports nutrition, NCAA recruiting rules, video analysis and sports psychology.

The cost of the two-day clinic for girls aged 12-18 is $220. All proceeds from registration for this event will go to help Kylie Doniak and her family with the massive medical costs incurred by the accident.

April 25, 2012 (Fullerton, CA) - Cal South, the official youth and adult state soccer association for Southern California, is proud to announce Cal South Pro+, the next evolution of player identification and development in the United States.

Pro+ combines all of Cal South's current and future elite player development initiatives and places them under one integrated structure. With the support of Nike, the areas of emphasis for Pro+ are the identification, development, inclusion and advancement of the top male and female soccer players in Southern California.

"We are incredibly proud of our history of success in placing players into the national team programs and winning national championships, but this is about taking a strong program and making it even better," said Steve Hoffman, Cal South's Director of Coaching and Player Development. "One of the great strengths of the Pro+ program is that it allows us to concentrate our resources on Southern California. Our camps and pools will be held here with U.S. Soccer scouts and coaches
coming to see, evaluate and work with our players at local facilities. This also allows us to expand our professional scouting system and Pro+ will now involve more players, including those from underserved communities. Players that might have been missed or excluded will now be seen and included."

"We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Pro+ enterprise and excited about the prospects it represents for our players," says Cal South President Johnnie Garza. "Pro+ signifies a strategic shift on the part of Cal South to evolve our Elite Player Identification and Development model for the future. It is a progressive initiative which is adaptive for the ever changing soccer environment our players and their families are currently facing. It leverages our core strength of
geography, populace and infrastructure to enable players in their pursuit of soccer opportunities while mitigating the barriers and burdens associated with travel costs and other expenses."

Garza states that Pro+ will open doors. "With the adoption of Pro+, Cal South is now positioned to provide diverse soccer opportunities to players not previously accessible to them. Essentially, it is an initiative inspired by our primary customer: the soccer player. Pro+ is part of Cal South's vision for the future. It will allow us to launch into multiple quadrants and provide practical alternatives and options for our player membership. I am especially excited by the outreach
opportunities we envision within our Inclusion component as we advance the program."

The first Pro+ event is the Pro+ Invitational Tournament over Memorial Day Weekend. Elite boys and girls age group state teams will be competing.

About the Cal South ODP Day Camps

The Cal South ODP Day Camps are designed for boys and girls in the U8-U14 brackets committed to reaching the highest level open to them in the sport, and this year enter their fourteenth year of promoting excellence in youth soccer in Southern California. They are "developmental" in that our experienced camp staff, already used to dealing with and developing youth soccer talent at the state, regional and national levels, will build on and improve the technical and tactical skills that
players have acquired during the soccer year. Our program creates a challenging environment where each player will learn about themselves and their strengths and weaknesses. Players are encouraged to compete both in and outside of their comfort zones, and will be given the knowledge and tools to improve.

We have scheduled eight camps in strategic locations throughout Southern California this summer to provide every player in the U8-U14 age groups an opportunity to attend. Each camp lasts three hours each day, and maximizes the quality of that time. Each group has a low coach-to-player ratio, which optimizes the individual development of each player. For goalkeepers, every session includes specific goalkeeping training with our Goalkeeping Academy staff coaches.

Each day, the coaches will emphasize tactics, speed of play, speed of thought, movement with and without the ball, and technical speed. Making good decisions under pressure will be the theme of the week, and players will have the opportunity to apply what has been taught each day under match conditions. At the end of the week, each player receives a valuable personal evaluation from their coach, and will feel challenged and eager to take their game to the next level.

Entering its eighth year, our successful Cal South ODP Residential Youth Academy Camps are held at the historic Thacher School in Ojai Valley. Our program emphasizes proper camp philosophy, quality facilities, a progressive and well thought-out curriculum, organized administrators, and an experienced top-notch licensed coaching staff held to the highest standards. Our youth academy camps are open to players in the U10-U14 age brackets, and our hugely successful Finishing and Goalkeeping Academy
is open to those playing in the U14-U17 age brackets.

Our ODP Youth Academy Residential Camps offer an intense and focused week of training for players determined to improve their game and learn what it takes to be the best. Our highly qualified staff conduct a training curriculum modeled after the U.S. Youth National Teams, emphasizing technical training in individual and small group concepts as well as team play. Training consists of competitive, high energy sessions that put players under pressure to make good decisions, balanced with solo and
            cooperative activities.

The new ODP Finishing and Goalkeeping Academies run simultaneously, but as separate camps. The Finishing Academy focuses solely on the player's ability to score goals, preparing scorers for any situation. The camp's theme is "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take!" The Goalkeeping Academy focuses on one of the most demanding and mentally challenging positions on the field. This camp's specialized training develops a player's presence in the goal, tactical
            awareness, leadership and consistency.

In addition to the on-field activities throughout the week, we will introduce mental concepts as well as educational sessions on fitness, nutrition, ODP, college and the National Team programs.
