May 10, 2013 (Fullerton, CA) - Cal South, Cal North and US Youth Soccer Region IV announced today the formation of the California Regional League. The California Regional League is a division of the newly revamped Far West Regional League, which will now feature automatic qualification spots for the US Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships going forward.

The California Regional League will be one of three divisions in the US Youth Soccer Far West Regional League. Cal South and Cal North will comprise the two state associations in the division. The other divisions will be Four Corners Division: New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah and Southern Nevada; and the Northern Division: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Hawaii, Alaska and Northern Nevada. The California Regional League will receive two qualification spots in the
US Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships, while the Four Corners and Northern Divisions will receive one each.

Teams playing in the California Regional League will play the best clubs and teams within each age group in the state of California. With the focus now centered on high-level, localized league play and two in-state showcase events, team travel and costs will be significantly lower. The concentration of competitive teams in league and showcase play will also increase exposure to U.S. Soccer National Team staff, top college coaches, Region IV ODP staff, Cal North ODP staff and Cal
                            South Pro+ scouts.

“We have been working on the concept of the California Regional league for some time now, with the involvement and input of Directors of Coaching from some of the top Cal North and Cal South clubs," said Cal South Board President John Mullen. "We have also had guidance and input from NCAA championship-winning college coaches to help us create this league, which will lower costs and reduce travel, while providing both top-level competition and maximum exposure for
the players to college coaches, in addition to ODP and national coaching staffs. This is a great opportunity for the players, their parents, and the coaches who put so much effort into their teams."

Cal North Board Chairman Dr. Pete Zopfi was equally enthusiastic. “The history of youth soccer in Northern and Southern California is highlighted by the development of thousands of successful collegiate, national and professional male and female soccer players. Finally, the stars of the future will compete together in the California Regional League, as the best teams of Cal North and Cal South provide collegiate coaches, national coaches and professional scouts the
opportunity to see the best players in the nation. No longer will significant financial challenges and excessive travel prohibit players from being discovered. Yes, dreams can come true!”

Invitations for clubs to participate in the California Regional League will be sent in late May. The first showcase and play-in competition will be hosted by Cal South in August. California Regional League play begins in September.

The Invitational is focused on training both on the field and in the classroom, and with very high levels of play set for the teams. Guest speakers scheduled to appear at the event are Eric Wynalda (U.S. Soccer and Cal South Hall of Fame member) and April Kater (U.S. Soccer Women's Head Development Coach).

Through our vision of Food With Integrity, Chipotle is seeking better food from
using ingredients that are not only fresh, but that—where possible—are sustainably grown and naturally raised with respect for the animals, the land, and the farmers who produce the food.

Through their success in this weekend's tournament, held at the Ontario Soccer Park in Ontario, Calif. from April 19-21, PSA Elite and Doxa Italia locked up berths in the opening round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup competition. It is PSA's second straight visit to the U.S. Open Cup, while Doxa clinched their second berth in three years.

Through a weekend of generally high-scoring games, PSA had topped Doxa in opening day action with a 3-0 shutout. Last year's Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Cinderella team, Cal FC, started out hot with a pair of victories, but lost to Doxa on Saturday afternoon to miss out on making a return trip to the century-old tournament where they defeated the MLS' Portland Timbers to make it all the way to the fourth round. In the Region IV championship match, PSA Elite went into the
second half with a 2-1 lead over Doxa, and then capped it with another pair of goals to take the victory.

The first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is set to begin on May 14, 2013. April 3, 2013 (Chicago, IL) - Former U.S. Men’s National Team forwards Joe-Max Moore and Peter Vermes have been elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Moore is the sole Player representative, while Vermes enters the Hall of Fame as a representative from the Veteran ballot. None of the candidates in the Builder category received the required amount of votes to be elected into the Hall of Fame this year.

As a forward and midfielder who played for three U.S. World Cup teams, Moore enters the Hall of Fame in his second to last year of eligibility on the player ballot. Starting with the 1992 Olympics, Moore made 100 appearances for the Men’s National Team over the next decade, including three FIFA World Cups and his 24 goals rank fifth all-time in MNT history. He also spent six seasons in Major League Soccer – all with the New England Revolution – scoring 53
goals. [Cal South Editor's note: After moving to Southern California at the age of 14, Moore played for Mission Viejo High School and played club soccer in Cal South for three seasons with the North Huntington Beach Futbol Club.]

Moore scored plenty of big goals in big games for his country throughout his career, however, none bigger than his final two tallies. On Oct. 7, 2001 in Foxboro, Mass. Moore scored both goals in the crucial 2-1 World Cup clinching victory against Jamaica, spearheading the USA’s best World Cup run in history the following year.

The National Soccer Hall of Fame induction announcement comes as part of Centennial Week, as U.S. Soccer continues a year-long celebration honoring the history of the game. Centennial Week kicked off Tuesday with the ringing of the NYSE closing bell and continues Thursday with activities all day in Times Square. The week-long celebration will culminate on April 5, the exact date the U.S. Soccer charter was signed back in 1913, with a press conference at New York City Hall,
lighting of the Empire State Building and a watch party for the U.S. Women’s National Team at Nevada Smiths.

Joining Moore in the Hall of Fame from the Veteran ballot is current Sporting Kansas City head coach Peter Vermes. Vermes was an integral part of the U.S. Men’s National Team from 1988-97, making his debut in the ’88 Olympic Games. He scored 11 goals in his 66 career caps and helped the MNT qualify for its first FIFA World Cup in 40 years in 1990. Following the ’90 World Cup in Italy, Vermes captained the MNT for its championship run in the inaugural CONCACAF
                            Gold Cup in ’91.

Vermes also became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch first divisions during his club career and starred in MLS from 1996-2002 for the New York MetroStars, Colorado Rapids and Kansas City Wizards.

“Soccer is the consummate team sport and being inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame is certainly indicative of that. It is humbling and a great honor” Vermes said. “I am appreciative and have learned so much from all of the teammates I have played with and now all the players I have been around from the youth level up on the technical side. My dedication and passion for soccer will never waver and I am so grateful for this recognition.”

The location and date for the 2013 National Soccer Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is still to be determined and will be announced at a later date.
