THE ROAD FROM CAL SOUTH STATE CUP TO FAR WEST PRESIDENTS CUP: PATEADORES HB

March 12, 2018

Back in 2016, Pateadores HB was set out to clinch the Cal South State Cup. However, 2016 just wasn’t their year as they finished in the Quarterfinal Round.

Their return in 2017 would be different, however. The girls continued working hard, put in the hard work and dedication that their coach Christopher McCray expected of them, and went on to play the State Cup Governors Division without receiving any goals. The icing on the cake would be when they clinched the championship title in Temecula’s Galway Downs.

“The championship, as far as it goes, it’s amazing. There’s no better feeling. A hundred and fifteen teams and you end up as the top team, there’s nothing you can do better than that,” coach McCray said at the time.

However, the former AYSO team wasn’t finished. Coach McCray and his coaching staff continued at it, working with the girls for what would be a greater challenge: to clinch the Cal South State Cup Presidents Division title.

“I trained my girls as if we were in second place all the time, all year,” the Pateadores coach said this year. “The biggest thing for me was to let them know not to be complacent. A lot of people come in and have that hangover, luckily, we didn’t.”

But now, Pateadores HB and coach McCray have a greater challenge ahead, to represent Cal South and all of Southern California in the upcoming 2018 US Youth Soccer Far West President’s Cup in Salt Lake City.

“We’re representing Cal South, so we’re going to do our best all the time,” coach McCray said. “I feel that California is probably the biggest place in the world for girls soccer, for sure. By us actually getting the chance to represent Cal South and California, it means a great deal. We’re going to do our best to actually bring home that trophy, also.”
