U.S SOCCER ANNOUNCES 2017 OPEN CUP PAIRINGS; FIVE CAL SOUTH AFFILIATES LEARN OPPONENTS
April 12, 2017
U.S. Soccer released the pairings and host scenarios for the 2017 U.S Open Cup First Round and five Cal South affiliates have learned their opponents for the games that will take place on Wednesday, May 10. In the single-game elimination tournament, the winning teams will advance to the Second Round of Play where NASL and USL teams are introduced; these games are set for May 16-17.
Activity on May 10 will kick off at 7:00pm with Albion SC hosting Chula Vista FC at Mission Bay High School in San Diego. At the same time, FC Golden State Force will host Outbreak FC at Citrus College and Ventura County Fusion will welcome Moreno Valley FC to the Ventura College Sportsplex. At 7:30pm, the LA Wolves will play host to the San Diego Zest. La Maquina FC will be the lone team travelling outside of Southern California as they head to Central California where they will face the Fresno Fuego at Chukchansi Park.
This year's winning team will receive $250,000, a berth in the 2019 CONCACAF Champions' League and have its name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy, one of the oldest nationally contested trophies in American team sports. The runner-up will earn $60,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will take home a $15,000 cash prize.
Just last year, La Maquina eliminated the LA Wolves in the Third Round of play, becoming the lone-standing amateur club in the Fourth Round where they were eliminated in a controversial match against Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy.
