CAL SOUTH NATIONAL CUP BOYS 2005 CHAMPIONSHIP PROFILE: STRIKERS FC
March 20, 2017
With a competitive group of boys on his squad, Strikers FC coach Adrian Martinez knew that his team would go out for the Cal South National Cup BU12 Championship match against Spartans FC Pumas USA with the drive to clinch the title. After all, the same squad had already clinched the Cal South State Cup twice, the National Cup would be the icing on the cake.
Coming into the match, Strikers had a tough battle against the Spartans. Luckily, they were able to go to halftime with a 2-1 lead. Coach Martinez used halftime to remind the boys what they were playing for, but the push and motivation was something the boys naturally had internally as they came away with a 7-1 final score.
“This team is just hyper-competitive, these kids want to win every game, every exercise in training, they’re as competitive as it gets,” coach Martinez said after the game. “They’ve carried that mentality the whole year in every event we’ve gone to. It’s just been their expectation that they wanna go out and win it. It’s very exciting coaching this group of boys where the push and the motivation doesn’t have to come from the coaching staff, it’s all internal for them.”
It was that internal drive that allowed them to keep things going in the tougher challenge that is National Cup. However, the boys stepped up to the challenge, performed in each game and pulled the results needed against some of the fiercest competition in the region, proving their talent to all of Southern California.
“There were a lot of tough matches,” the Strikers FC coach said. “Our boys just responded so well, they were ready, they were motivated. To come out of the seven games having scored 28 goals and only giving up two against the top competition in Southern California, it’s pretty impressive.”
