IRS Reiterates Interest in Nonprofit Governance
Cal South Leagues and Clubs Reminded to Review Internal Policies
IRS Tax-Exempt and Government Entities (TE/GE) Commissioner Steven Miller made it clear in comments this week that his unit will continue to exercise a role in encouraging strong nonprofit governance practices, despite an acknowledged "absence of explicit federal statutory authority" to do so. According to the Bureau of National Affairs (BNA), Miller stated at an April 23 conference that the agency is interested in governance because "the effects of good or bad nonprofit governance show up in all that we do." Miller said the IRS will continue to "educate, engage, and indeed irritate" in the areas of governance by scrutinizing the composition and independence of an organization's board, its internal controls to safeguard assets, and executive compensation, among other areas.
