NCSA RECRUITING CORNER
Recruiting Slow Periods
College coaches are recruiting 365 days a year, but there are some slow times throughout the year of which the student-athlete should be aware.
The December holidays are typically a slow time in recruiting. Other slow times for soccer recruiting include early August when coaches are busy preparing for their upcoming season, and right after the season ends. If the emails and calls from coaches slow down during any of these periods it doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't interested in you or you are no longer a top recruit; it may simply mean that they are taking a break. However, just because
coaches slow down in their recruiting, it doesn't mean that you have the same luxury. Your recruiting doesn't stop or slow down until you choose a school.
When the incoming contacts slow down it is a great time to step-up your college research. This is a time for you to be pro-active in your recruiting and look for additional schools that could be a good fit. Investigate new locations or different types of schools. There are hundreds of schools to choose from and you owe it to yourself to explore all of your options before you make a final decision.
Keep track of the schools you have researched and liked, and contact the soccer coaches. Even if coaches are busy they will still check their email. Introduce yourself and make sure you keep track of the coaches you reach out to because you will need to follow-up with them if you do not get a response after two weeks.
The more schools you can research and coaches you can contact during these times, the better. You always want to do what you can to increase your opportunities and this is one of the ways you can do that. A big part of recruiting is balancing your time appropriately and when you take advantage of the slower recruiting times, you will be doing just that.
