Featured Lesson Plan: Receiving and Turning

by Elliott Spruell
Cal South Coaching Education Coordinator

1. Warm-Up

Organization:

• Half the group on the outside of the area with a ball. The other half of the group is inside the area without the balls.

Activity:

• Players in the middle check to receive a pass from a player on the outside. Once they receive it, they should turn and pass to an outside player without a ball, then check to receive another ball from a different player. Switch players inside and out after a pre-established time passes.

Variations:

• Limit the number of touches before the pass must be returned to an outside player.

Coaching Points:

• Check to ball at a quality angle in an effort to open body to the field.
• Quality passes. Play pass to correct foot.
• Quality first touch into space to set up second touch..
• Head up to see the playing area.

2. Small-Sided Activity

Organization:

• Two players in the area. Two neutral players on the outside of the area.

Activity:

• 1 vs. 1 with two neutral players. The attacking player in the middle checks to the neutral player to receive the ball. To score a point the player must receive, turn and play a pass to the neutral player on the opposite side of the field. Attacking player may play passes back to neutral player in order to maintain possession. If the defender wins the ball, they become the attacker.

Variations:

• 2 vs. 2 to incorporate a teammate within the area.

Coaching Points:

• Awareness of opposition
• Movement off the ball to create space
• Quality pass to correct foot
• Angle of approach to ball to ensure vision of entire playing area
• Disguise of turn
• Quality first touch away from pressure

3.Expanded Small-Sided Activity

Organization:

• 4 vs. 4 plus goalkeepers

Activity:

• 4 vs. 4 soccer. Players are restricted to staying in their own halves. Players may pass the ball over the half line but may not cross the half line themselves. Players may shoot from anywhere on the field.

Variations:

• Limit the number of touches for those in the defensive half and demand a certain number of touches for those in the attacking half to ensure receiving and turning with the ball.

Coaching Points:

• Team shape to create space
• Field awareness
• Communication
• Proper angle of approach
• Quality passes to correct foot
• First touch away from pressure and into space

4. Match

Organization:

• 7 vs. 7 including goalkeepers

Activity:

• 7 vs. 7 with no restrictions. One team plays a 2-2-2 and the other plays a 2-3-1 to ensure lots of opportunities to work on receiving and turning.

Coaching Points:

• Proper spacing
• Proper angle of support and approach
• Proper body shape when receiving
• Quality first touch into space, away from pressure
