REFEREEING IN CAL SOUTH:
TAKING YOUR FIRST STEPS

When you see the referee and assistant referee out there on the soccer field, do you often wonder what type of preparation and training they receive? If the individual referees do not receive the proper training, they are not going to be prepared to make their next move in actually stepping out there onto a soccer field.

Cal South, in connection with State Referee Committee, State Youth Referee Committee, and the individual referee associations throughout Southern California, offer many different styles of programs for these referees. We want to make sure that every referee that steps onto a soccer field is more than ready for that game.

Some people are interested in becoming a referee because they want to give back to the game. Becoming a referee is an excellent way to give back. In order for a person to become a referee, they have to take either a Recreational Referee course (Grade 9) or an entry-level referee course (Grade 8). These styles of courses are offered throughout the year by the various sanctioning bodies, leagues, and clubs. Once a referee has completed the course, they are ready to try stepping on the field.

Once you have completed a referee course, there are many additional training resources available for further development. If you are interested in gaining more knowledge and experience, come on out to the new and exciting Cal South referee training sessions. Cal South, in conjunction with the State Youth Referee Administrator, is going to start offering many training sessions where referees at all levels are encouraged to attend to expand their knowledge base. Some of the training sessions in the works are going to deal with fouls, misconduct, positioning, offside, and many other exciting topics.
